Syndicate presents selected works from Magdalena Kita’s new series, where she reinterprets traditional Byzantine, Flemish, and Classical icon painting techniques to illustrate her vision of a near-term Western future – one built around a female-centric society and a potential return to barbarism.
The icons are arranged around a tabletop triptych, in the style of a devotional in a medieval private residence where these chapels were a representation of their patrons’ piety and privilege.
Magdalena Kita (*1983 Debica PL) was a resident last spring at Superdeals, Brussels, in addition to a research residency in Athens. In 2016 she won both the Van Bommel Van Dam Prize and the Setareh Future Masters Award.
Her past solo projects include Superdeals (Brussels BE), Prince of Wales (Munich DE), Bruce Haines Mayfair (London), and Charlie James Gallery (Los Angeles). She has contributed to recent group exhibitions with Syndicate (at Snehta, Athens), the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Gisela Clement (Bonn DE), Museum Van Bommel Van Dam (Venlo NL), Drop City, and Petra Rinck (Düsseldorf DE). Last year, she launched Californication, a catalogue of her previous series, in an event at WIELS, Brussels.
Kita studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, in the classes of Rita McBride, Tal R, and Herbert Brandl. She lives in Cologne.
