Alex Reynolds CV

Syndicate presents Alex Reynolds' new film 'Esta puerta, esta ventana' (This door, this window) as part of Poppositions Brussels 2018.

The film sits somewhere between portraiture and sonic performance, the result of fantasising with a calculated and perverse use of sound and rhythm in order to consciously invade, connect, and alter the body. Alma Söderberg and Nilo Gallego, a choreographer and a musician with whom the artist shares an obsession with rhythm, are filmed in the same space, but not at the same time. Whilst they never appear together onscreen, the synchronicity of their rhythms, pauses, and movements produce an effect of coexistence, with sound as their only way of being together. The rehearsal room they inhabit thus becomes a physical rendering of the only place that holds them together: the virtual space of a film.

Alex Reynolds (b 1978, Bilbao) is an artist and filmmaker living in Brussels and Berlin, whose consistent obsession is in testing cinematic structures. Through sound works, performances, texts, publications, and moving image, her work meticulously examines and displaces elements from film. Particularly focusing on the language of fiction, Reynolds explores power relations, the difference between spectator and witness, and the invasive and expansive potential for point of view, emotion, and empathy.

Reynolds is also currently showing ‘Esta puerta, esta ventana’ as part of Every Object is a Thing but not every thing is an object, through 19 May at Hollybush Gardens (London UK). Her recent solo exhibitions include those at Estrany-de la Mota (Barcelona ES), Galeria Marta Cervera (Madrid ES), and Syndicate (Cologne DE).

She contributed to other projects with Syndicate in Athens GR and Düsseldorf DE, as well as at Centro Botín (Santander ES), CAC Vilnius (LT), Komplot (Brussels BE), and Bonniers Konsthall (Stockholm SE) among others. Her awards include a 2016 Fundacion Botín international visual arts prize and a 2014 fellowship at the Akademie Schloss Solitude (Stuttgart DE). Reynolds is a lecturer at Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten (KASK) in Ghent.
