SOMETHING II BE SCARED OF is the second installment of an exhibition series by Sam Keogh, Joseph Noonan-Ganley, and Linda Stupart following their collaboration at a.m. London in 2015.
SOMETHING TO BE SCARED OF is the title of the second chapter of Julia Kristeva’s ‘Powers of Horror: An Essay on Abjection’ (1982), which considers the relationship between fear and language. Fear precedes text, Kristeva writes, it is ‘proto-writing’, but is also the name given to expression that cannot be interpreted or sensibly codified in adult, proper, masculine language.
SOMETHING II BE SCARED OF is situated in the spaces between texts, bodies, desire, and fear. Keogh presents a cluster of small sculpture and collages arranged in the form of a prototype control panel used to navigate a performance out of the present. The movement of zippers in Noonan-Ganley’s video and textile work trace exposure and seclusion arising from the dresses and homoerotic drawings of the couturier Charles James. Stupart's video and performance works write a dialogue between the disappearing polar ice caps (as melting, dissipating body) and the appearance of crystals and fibres under people's skin (as in Morgellons condition).
Sam Keogh (*1985, Ireland) is currently a resident at the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam. Most recently, he has contributed to ‘Darkwater, The Dead of the night’ at CPG London and ‘Hmn Edition 8’ at Napier Grove Community Hall, London. His solo exhibition 'Eurocopter EC135' took place at the Dortmunder Kunstverein last summer. Last year Keogh also contributed to 'Riddle of the Burial Grounds' at Extra City, Antwerp and ‘ECTOPLASM’ at 1646, Den Hague.
Joseph Noonan-Ganley (*1987, UK) lives in London. He has recently contributed performances to 'Stories From The Sculpture City' at the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds and Eros Press’ 'Self/Love' publication launch at Bosse & Baum, London. His solo exhibition 'Femme Fabrications' took place at Quick Millions, London, and his installations have been included in 'Plural Melts' at Yvonne Lambert, Berlin and 'On Dedication' at Corridor Project Space, Amsterdam - all 2016.
Linda Stupart (*South Africa) is an artist, writer, and educator living in London. In 2016, Stupart published the novella 'Virus' alongside their solo exhibition 'A dead writer exists in words and language as a type of Virus' at Arcadia Missa, London. Additionally, Stupart co-organised ‘Coven' at Transmission Gallery, Glasgow last year with artist Travis Alabanza and writer/witch Katrina Zaat.
